Union General Hospital Earns 5-Star Quality Rating

February 15, 2018

Union General Hospital, Inc. received five-stars from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in its Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating. Less than 10% of hospitals nationwide received five stars. The average rating in the U.S. is only three stars.

Union General is the only hospital in their region to receive a five-star quality rating. In fact, there were only six hospitals in the whole state of Georgia that received this designation.

According to CMS’s website, the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating provides information on how well hospitals provide recommended care to their patients. This information can help consumers make informed decisions about health care.

“Combined with compassionate care and our commitment to provide state-of-the-art technology, Union General Hospital has delivered the highest quality patient care to our community for more than 59 years,” says Lewis Kelley, Chief Executive Officer, Union General Hospital. “A five-star rating by CMS demonstrates the hard work and dedication of our physicians, nurses and staff who provide the very best to our patients daily.”

The overall rating summarizes up to 57 quality measures reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia, as well as, measures that focus on hospital-acquired infections, including catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

The overall rating demonstrates how well each hospital performed, on average, as compared to other hospitals in the U.S. Hospital ratings range.

The methodology uses a statistical model known as a latent variable model. Seven different latent variable models are used to calculate scores for seven groups of measures including: Mortality; Safety of Care; Readmissions; Patient Experience; Effectiveness of Care; Timeliness of Care and Efficient Use of Medical Imaging.
